Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs white fish fillets (cod or catfish)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

Soak fish in buttermilk for 30 minutes.

Mix flour, cornmeal, baking powder, Old Bay, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.

Heat oil to 375°F in a deep fryer or heavy pot.

Remove fish from buttermilk, letting excess drip off, then dredge in flour mixture.

Fry fish 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and flaky.

Drain on paper towels and serve hot with lemon wedges and tartar sauce.
