Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 9-inch round pans.
Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Beat in butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
Divide among pans and bake 25-30 minutes. Cool completely.
For frosting: combine sugar, buttermilk, butter, and baking soda in large pot.
Bring to boil and cook to soft ball stage (238°F), stirring constantly.
Remove from heat, add vanilla, and beat until thick enough to spread.
Quickly frost cake layers before frosting sets.

The caramel frosting is tricky - work fast once it's ready, and have a helper to hold the layers while you frost.
