Ingredients
Shop the tools- 1 whole chicken (3-4 lbs)
- 8 cups water
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 bay leaves
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3/4 cup milk
- Fresh parsley
- Salt and pepper
Instructions
Place chicken, water, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, and bay leaves in large pot.
Bring to boil, then simmer 1 hour.
Remove chicken, let cool, shred meat. Discard bones.
Strain broth, return to pot with vegetables.
For dumplings: mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter.
Stir in milk until just combined.
Bring broth to gentle boil. Drop dumpling dough by spoonfuls.
Cover and simmer 15 minutes without lifting lid.
Return chicken to pot, season with salt and pepper.
Garnish with parsley and serve.
Chef's Comfy Tip
Resist the urge to peek while the dumplings cook - lifting the lid releases the steam they need to become fluffy.
