Ingredients

  • 2 lbs collard greens
  • 2 smoked ham hocks
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Hot sauce for serving

Instructions

Wash collard greens thoroughly and remove tough stems. Chop into bite-sized pieces.

Place ham hocks in large pot with broth, onion, and garlic.

Bring to boil, reduce heat, and simmer 45 minutes until ham is tender.

Add collard greens, sugar, and red pepper flakes. Stir well.

Cover and simmer 45 minutes to 1 hour until greens are very tender.

Remove ham hocks, shred meat, and return to pot.

Stir in vinegar and season with salt and pepper.

Serve with pot likker (cooking liquid) and hot sauce on the side.
