Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

Soak okra in buttermilk for 15 minutes.

Mix cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne, and garlic powder.

Heat 2 inches of oil to 375°F in a deep skillet.

Remove okra from buttermilk, letting excess drip off.

Toss okra in cornmeal mixture to coat well.

Fry in batches 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy.

Drain on paper towels.

Season with additional salt while hot and serve immediately.
